Free tier

What it is
A free tier is a plan that costs nothing to use, usually with limits. The limit might be the number of users, projects, contacts or records, the available features, or how long data is kept. It is different from a free trial, which ends after a set period. For example, a form tool may allow unlimited forms but cap the number of responses each month. Many tools in the library list a free tier, including Airtable, Notion and Slack.
Why it matters
A free plan lets you test a tool on real work and keep small needs at no cost. It also shows what you will hit as you grow, so you can see how the paid plans compare. The risk is building something important on a plan that is too limited, or one that the vendor may change later. For serious use, you will probably need a paid plan.
What to check
- Which limits apply, and how soon would your team reach them?
- Are key features, such as integrations or exports, missing from the free plan?
- Does the vendor offer a clear way to upgrade without losing your data?
- Can you export everything if you leave?
