Conditional logic

Questions, steps or actions change automatically depending on earlier answers, so people only see what is relevant to them.

What it is

Conditional logic, also called branching or skip logic, lets a form or process change based on what someone has already entered. For example, a form asks about company size, and only companies over fifty people are shown a question about teams. In a checklist, a step may appear only if an earlier answer calls for it. Fillout, Google Forms, Jotform, Microsoft Forms, Process Street, Slack, Tally and Typeform list this feature.

Why it matters

Long forms put people off, and showing irrelevant fields leads to abandoned submissions and messy data. Branching keeps each path short and still collects detail where it matters. It is useful for lead forms, surveys and onboarding. For a form with three simple fields, you do not need it.

What to check

  • How many conditions can you stack, and can you combine several answers?
  • Can logic also hide sections, change the end page or send the answer to different places?
  • Can you test every path before publishing?
  • Does it work on mobile and does the data export cleanly?
