Why Salesforce

Manages contacts, leads, opportunities and complex sales pipelines with deep customisation and automation capabilities. Includes Einstein AI for sales insights, Slack alerts for team coordination and integrations across the MarTech ecosystem. Built for B2B revenue teams managing high volumes of activity, from small teams to mid-market and enterprise organisations.

Best for
B2B sales teams, from a small team to mid-market and enterprise, that need a CRM they can shape around complex pipelines, partner channels and heavy reporting.

What it does

Salesforce is a CRM. Sales Cloud, its sales product, stores your contacts, leads, accounts and opportunities, tracks every deal through a pipeline and forecasts what will close. Around that sit custom objects, flows for automation, reports and dashboards.

Salesforce now pushes its AI agents hard. Its sales page describes an outbound agent called Hunter, AI help for sellers and Sales Cloud inside Slack. It also has a free option, shown in its plan comparison, and many other clouds for service and marketing with separate pricing.

Why you would need it

You need a real CRM when a spreadsheet or a light tool stops holding your sales process. The signs are several teams touching the same account, different sales motions for different products or regions, and a board that wants numbers you can trust.

Salesforce is the answer when your process is unusual. You can model almost any object and rule. What changes is that the CRM follows your business, instead of your business bending to the CRM.

Where it fits

Salesforce is the system of record for customers and deals. Lead sources, forms and enrichment feed it. Sales engagement tools such as Salesloft, call tools and marketing platforms read from it and write back to it.

It replaces a lighter CRM like Pipedrive or HubSpot when you have outgrown their structure, and it replaces the spreadsheets that sit around them.

What stands out

  • Configurability. Custom objects, flows and permission models let you build the process you actually run.
  • Reach of the ecosystem. Salesforce is the CRM most other sales and marketing tools connect to first.
  • Slack connection. Since Slack belongs to Salesforce, deal updates and CRM data can sit in the channels where your team already talks.
  • Developer tooling and an official MCP server. Salesforce publishes an MCP server in its CLI organisation on GitHub, so AI assistants can work with your org.

My take

Salesforce is the most configurable revenue platform I have used, and also one that punishes neglect. The same freedom that lets you model anything lets a lean team build a mess. A simple lead routing rule already asks you to understand flows, assignments and profiles.

Having run a Pipedrive premium agency and now working mostly in HubSpot, I'd say the choice is about complexity. If your sales process fits in a pipeline with a few stages, a lighter tool will ship faster and cost less effort. If you run multi-currency deals, partner channels or several product lines, Salesforce pays you back.

Verdict

Pick Salesforce when you have a complex sales process, an admin or partner to look after it, and you want one record to hold everything. Skip it when you are a small team living in your inbox, or a single-product company that wants to launch campaigns fast. HubSpot or Pipedrive will get you there with less upkeep.

Before you choose

It needs an owner

Salesforce works best with someone who looks after it, an in-house admin or a partner. Without that person, customisations pile up, reports stop matching reality and every new project gets slower and riskier.

Cost grows with every add-on

Sales Cloud is only one product. Marketing, service, analytics and AI come as separate products with their own pricing. Ask for the full price of the setup you will actually run, not only the sales licence.

Adoption is the real risk

If reps only see data entry and no benefit, they stop updating records. Decide what each rep gets back from the CRM before you roll it out, and keep the required fields short.

Compare lighter options first

HubSpot and Pipedrive are quicker to set up and easier to run. Attio and Close are also worth a look for smaller teams. Pick Salesforce because you need its depth, not because it is the famous name.
