Cookiebot

Cookiebot logo
Scans your website for cookies and trackers, shows a consent banner, and blocks non-essential tracking until approved.

Why Cookiebot

Cookiebot scans your website for cookies and tracking scripts, displays a configurable consent banner, and blocks non-essential cookies until visitors approve them. It generates an automated cookie declaration and maintains a consent log for compliance audits. It fits small to mid-sized businesses and website owners needing automated GDPR and CCPA compliance without technical configuration.

Best for
Small and mid-sized businesses and website owners who need a cookie banner, automatic blocking and consent records for GDPR and CCPA, without building it themselves.

What it does

Cookiebot is a consent management platform. It scans your website for cookies and trackers, shows visitors a consent banner, and blocks non-essential tracking until they agree. It keeps a log of each consent decision and generates a cookie declaration from what it found.

It supports Google Consent Mode v2 and IAB TCF v2.3, works in more than 47 languages and covers rules such as GDPR, CCPA and LGPD.

Why you would need it

If you run Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads or any analytics tool, you set cookies. In the EU and in several other places you need consent before that happens, and you need proof you asked.

Ad platforms also expect a proper consent setup. Without one you risk legal trouble, broken tracking and wasted ad spend. You feel the pain when a new tag goes live and nobody checks whether it fires before consent.

Where it fits

Cookiebot sits between your website and your tracking tools. It loads first and decides what Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, ad pixels and similar scripts may do. It plugs into WordPress, Wix and Webflow sites, and it works with Google Tag Manager.

It replaces a hand-built banner and a manual list of scripts to block.

What stands out

  • A scanner that finds and classifies cookies, so the declaration reflects what the site really does.
  • Auto-blocking until the visitor consents.
  • Google Consent Mode v2 support, which ad platforms ask for.
  • Consent logs you can show to an auditor.
  • A free plan for one small domain.

How setup goes

You add one script to the site header. Cookiebot then scans the site and lists what it found. You review each cookie, assign it to a category, such as necessary, preferences, statistics or marketing, and style the banner. The review is the part that takes time. Plan for a session of half an hour or more, and rescan after you add tools, because new tags are the usual source of surprises.

My take

I have built custom cookie banners in Webflow from scratch. It works if you know code, and it is fiddly. You must block every script until consent, test across browsers and devices, and redo the logic whenever you add a tag.

I would not recommend that route. A tool that scans, blocks and keeps logs saves you the maintenance. Custom design options can be limited, so check the banner looks right on your brand early.

Verdict

Pick Cookiebot when you run tracking or paid ads and want consent handled without a developer. Skip it when you have a developer and a legal team who want full control, or a site with no tracking at all.

Before you choose

Pricing follows site size

Cookiebot prices by domain and number of subpages, in euros excluding VAT, and the free plan covers one domain with a limited number of subpages. A big site pays for a larger tier. Count your subpages before you pick.

Custom tracking needs a manual step

The scanner catches common tools. Anything custom may need you to declare it by hand. Retest after every new tag.

Banner design limits

The templates are quick to deploy, and deep design changes can be restricted. Look at the banner on your own site during the 14-day trial, which needs no card.

Alternatives to compare

Platforms such as Osano and OneTrust do similar work, and some website builders have basic consent tools built in. Compare language support and the Google Consent Mode setup.
