Pairs a shared inbox with a knowledge base for customer support and self-service help.

Why Help Scout

Help Scout is a customer service platform pairing a shared inbox with Docs, its embeddable knowledge base for building public or access-restricted help centres. It includes AI-assisted article editing, workflow automation for routing conversations, and an official MCP server. Ideal for B2B and SaaS support teams wanting a genuine knowledge base rather than a heavier enterprise helpdesk.

Best for
B2B and SaaS support teams that want a shared inbox with a proper knowledge base attached, without the weight of an enterprise helpdesk, from a small team to a larger group.

What it does

Help Scout is a customer support platform. Its core is a shared inbox that brings email, chat, social, SMS and voice into one workspace, with automatic assignment and workflows. Docs is its knowledge base, and Beacon is the widget that puts help articles and live chat on your site or in your app.

It has AI built in: drafting replies, summaries and translation for agents, and an AI agent that answers customers. A reporting layer shows volume, response times and team performance.

Why you would need it

A shared mailbox works until it does not. Two people reply to the same email, nobody knows who owns a thread, and customers ask the same questions that are already answered somewhere.

You feel it when a customer writes twice because the first message got lost. A proper inbox gives every conversation an owner and a history. A help centre next to it lets customers find answers without writing at all.

Where it fits

Help Scout is the daily workspace of a support team. It connects to tools such as HubSpot, Slack, Shopify and Zapier, and its higher plans add Salesforce and Jira connections. It replaces a shared Gmail inbox and often a separate knowledge base tool.

It also sits in the same space as Zendesk, Freshdesk and Intercom.

What stands out

  • A shared inbox and a knowledge base from the same vendor.
  • AI drafting, summaries and translation, and an AI agent for customer requests.
  • Beacon, which brings help articles and live chat into your site or app.
  • An official API, workflows and a read-only MCP server.

My take

I like that Help Scout stays simple. Support teams of five to fifty people can set it up in a day, and the inbox feels like email, which helps people adopt it.

The trade-offs show up as you grow. Advanced workflows and some integrations only arrive on higher plans, and compliance features such as single sign-on sit on the top tier. A very large support organisation with complex routing will likely want something heavier. The AI answers add-on is billed separately, so watch that cost when volume goes up.

Verdict

Pick Help Scout when you want a friendly shared inbox plus a help centre, and your team is small to mid-sized. Skip it when you need deep enterprise automation, or a heavy ticketing system with advanced reporting.

Plan splits

Help Scout is priced per user, and features are split across Free, Standard, Plus and Pro. Integrations, SLA policies, workflow limits and single sign-on do not all come at the same level. List what you need before you pick a plan, and check the vendor's current plan page.

AI is partly an add-on

Drafting and summaries are part of the product, but the AI agent that answers customers is billed per resolution. Work out your expected volume and how many questions the agent could handle, so the cost does not surprise you.

Fit for large teams

It is built for clarity, not for enormous support operations. If you need complex routing, deep analytics or a large ticketing hierarchy, compare Zendesk and Freshdesk.

Ecommerce focus

If you sell through an online store and want order data in the ticket, Gorgias is built for that. Help Scout does connect to Shopify, but its centre of gravity is software and services support.
