Clay

Enriches prospect lists by combining a spreadsheet with data from 100+ providers, AI research and custom logic.

Why Clay

Clay is a data enrichment and prospecting platform built around a spreadsheet interface where every column can run a lookup, API call or AI prompt. Teams upload or build prospect lists, then layer enrichments on top: find emails, pull firmographics, scrape websites or write personalised outreach with an LLM. It chains many data providers behind one interface.

Best for
B2B sales, growth and RevOps teams and agencies who build targeted prospect lists, enrich them from several data sources and write research-based outreach.

What it does

Clay is a data enrichment and prospecting platform built around a spreadsheet-style table. Each row is a person or company, and each column can run a lookup, call an API or run an AI prompt. You start from a list or a search, then add columns: find emails, pull company data, research a website, score the fit or write a personal opening line.

Its waterfall enrichment tries one data provider, then the next, so you get better coverage than any single source. It also offers AI research agents, signals such as job changes, audience syncing to ad platforms and its own sequencer.

Why you would need it

Outbound fails on data before it fails on copy. Lists have gaps, emails bounce, titles are old and every message reads like a mail merge. Buying one database never covers everyone.

The pain is felt when a rep spends the morning copying between tabs, or when a campaign lands on the wrong people because the list was thin. Clay brings the sources and the logic into one place and runs them for you.

Where it fits

Clay sits between your lead sources and your CRM or outreach tool. Lists, searches and exports feed it. It feeds HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, and tools such as Smartlead and Instantly, or its own sequencer. It also lists connections to Slack, BigQuery, Snowflake and Airtable.

It replaces a stack of separate enrichment and research tools. Compare it with Apollo, ZoomInfo and Lusha.

What stands out

  • Waterfall enrichment across many data providers, bought through one account.
  • Research agents that turn web pages into usable fields.
  • Signals and audiences for timing and for keeping CRM records fresh.
  • An official MCP connection, so reps can search and run set functions from their AI tool.

My take

Clay is the tool I would reach for if outbound is a serious motion and your team cares about data quality. The composability is the point: you build the exact workflow you want, from list to personalised line.

What I would watch is the learning curve and the cost. It rewards people who tinker. Credits get used faster than you expect once AI columns and waterfalls run across a large list, so test on a small batch first.

Verdict

Pick Clay if you run outbound or RevOps and want control over list building and research. Skip it if you only need a clean CRM and a few contacts, or if your motion is mostly inbound.

Before you choose

Credits and cost control

Clay is usage-based. Actions and data credits drive the price, and plans scale with them. Run a small test list, check the credit use per row and then project it to your real volume. Set limits for the team early.

The learning curve

The table and column model is flexible, and also unfamiliar. Getting a workflow reliable takes iteration. Plan time to learn it, or start from a template.

Data quality still needs checking

Output is only as good as the providers behind it. Verify emails before you send, and sample the AI research for mistakes. A confident wrong detail in a cold message hurts more than a generic one.

Alternatives

Apollo bundles a database with outreach in a simpler way, and ZoomInfo and Cognism are database-first. Pick Clay for flexibility, and the others for ease. Also note the API and CLI are read-only for tables, so you cannot build tables through them.
