Tracking

Measuring what works and following data to make better decisions. It tells you which changes are worth keeping and which to drop.

Chapters

  1. Article5 min

Build the measurement plan on paper first

Write the measurement plan before configuring any tool, and track only the events that inform budget or roadmap decisions. Everything else is noise.

  2. Article2 min

Capture revenue and the full funnel, not just the top

Many companies track traffic in detail and lose sight at the point of revenue. Instrument the events closest to money so you know which channels bring paying customers.

  3. Article2 min

Choose a stack you will not fight

Choose the smallest analytics stack that answers your measurement plan and that you will keep maintained, because a tool you do not trust gives confident wrong answers.

  4. Article2 min

    Common failures

The mistakes that ruin analytics setups, from installing GA4 before deciding the questions to inconsistent event names, and how to prevent each one.

  5. Article2 min

Consent and privacy: control, not bypass

Moving measurement to your own server changes where data is processed, not whether you may collect it. Consent banners and consent mode still apply.

  6. Article1 min

Decide what you are measuring before you touch a tool

Most setups fail at the first step by reaching for a tool. Start by writing down the decisions the numbers must inform, then choose what to track.

  7. Article2 min

    FAQs

How much analytics an early B2B company needs, whether to pick GA4 or a privacy first tool such as Plausible, and where server side tracking earns its place.

  8. Article2 min

Feed the ad platforms what they have stopped seeing

The bigger payoff is sending richer first party conversions back to ad platforms, through the Meta Conversions API and similar, so bidding improves.

  9. Article2 min

Govern the setup like a system, not a one-off project

Tracking decays as the site, funnel and campaigns change. Give it an owner, a naming convention, a tracking plan and regular audits instead of treating it as a one off project.

  10. Article2 min

Prove it moved the number, not that it ran green

A green response only means an event was sent. Check that attribution, cookie life and conversion counts actually improved.

  11. Article2 min

Respect privacy and consent, and build for the cookieless future

GDPR and ePrivacy make analytics a legal matter too. Build tracking around proper consent and first party, server side data that still works as cookies disappear.

  12. Article2 min

The browser is leaking infrastructure you rented

Browser tags run under rules that Apple, Google and Mozilla keep tightening, so your analytics sit on infrastructure you do not control.

  13. Article2 min

The one-evening setup without a data team

Self hosting on Google Cloud is a project with a monthly bill. A managed server container gets the same setup running in one evening.

  14. Article2 min

Turn the data into decisions, or the whole setup is theatre

Analytics nobody acts on is theatre. Close the loop with a regular review where each key number has an owner and a decision it is meant to inform.

  15. Article2 min

    What server-side tracking actually is

A container on your own server sits between your site and vendors, so the browser talks to you and you decide what is passed on.

  16. Article2 min

When to do it, when to wait, and the action plan

Set it up once real paid acquisition spend or a similar trigger applies, and wait on a pre revenue site. A step by step action plan follows.

  17. Article2 min

Why it is your best buyers who go missing

Tracking loss is not random. Ad blockers and privacy tools are most common among technical, senior B2B buyers, so the best leads vanish first.

  18. Article3 min

How to install Tag Manager and GA4

Install Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics 4 correctly. Get the right foundations in place before tracking any events or conversions.

  19. Article3 min

How to decide what to track

Track what matters for growth decisions. Map key conversions, name events with clear conventions, and document tracking specifications.

  20. Article3 min

How to track key conversion events

Set up conversion tracking for real business actions. Track meetings booked, sign-ups completed, key pages visited, and payments made.

  21. Article3 min

How to build reports in GA4

Build useful GA4 reports once your events are tracked. Understand what's working with funnels, segmentation, and automated reporting.

  22. Article3 min

How to filter internal traffic in GA4

Exclude your own IP address from Google Analytics 4. Keep your data accurate and free from internal traffic noise that skews metrics.

About this playbook

Measurement means tracking the metrics that matter: website traffic, leads, customer acquisition cost, retention and revenue. Start by choosing a few metrics that tell you if your business is working. Then track them consistently so you can spot trends. Common mistakes include measuring too much and acting on nothing, or measuring vanity metrics like traffic that do not correlate with money. Focus on metrics that connect to revenue and retention. Then build the habit of reviewing them weekly and making small decisions based on what the data says.
