Unify keyword research, backlink analysis, technical audits and rank tracking in one dashboard.

Why SEMrush

SEMrush combines keyword research, backlink analysis, technical audits and rank tracking for organic search, paid search and content programmes. It suits marketing teams and agencies that want one dashboard for SEO data instead of managing multiple tools. The platform includes competitive intelligence and content topic clusters for spotting opportunities at scale.

Best for
Marketing teams, agencies and growth marketers who want keyword research, backlink analysis, site audits, rank tracking and now AI search visibility in one subscription.

What it does

Semrush is an SEO and search marketing suite. It covers keyword research, competitor analysis, backlink analysis, technical site audits and rank tracking. It also reports on how your brand appears in AI answers, with AI visibility, prompt research and AI brand sentiment.

Beyond SEO it has toolkits for content, local search, market analysis, social and advertising, some with separate pricing. There is a REST API and an official MCP server, so the data can go into your own tools and AI assistants.

Why you would need it

Running two agencies taught me the cost of scattered data. Every tool in the stack must either pay rent in insight or make someone faster. For search, the pain is switching between a keyword tool, a backlink tool, a rank tracker and a site crawler, then pasting numbers into a sheet.

Semrush puts those views in one login. You find what customers search for, see what competitors rank for, check what is broken on your own site and track the result. If search is a real channel for you, that saves hours every week.

Where it fits

Semrush sits at the research and measurement end of your content workflow. It feeds briefs to writers, audits to developers and reports to clients. It reads from and complements Google Search Console and Google Analytics.

It competes most directly with Ahrefs. For AI answer tracking it also competes with Scrunch AI, which is a specialist.

What stands out

  • Range in one place. Keywords, backlinks, audits, rank tracking, content and AI visibility share one dataset and one login.
  • AI visibility. You can see how often your brand appears in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews, and which prompts people use.
  • An official MCP server and API. The MCP server sets up with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other clients, so you can ask questions about your data in plain language.
  • Reports with integrations. Scheduled reports can pull in Google Analytics and Search Console data.

My take

The interface can feel crowded, and the first week inside Semrush is like drinking from a fire hose. The smaller databases, such as Dutch long-tail keywords, lag behind US and UK volumes, so I still cross-check in Google Search Console before pitching a niche phrase.

Even so, it is the toolkit I'd use as the yardstick for keyword research, gap analysis and technical audits. The value depends on use. If you live in performance dashboards daily, it repays itself quickly. If you only touch SEO once in a while, a lighter tool will do.

Verdict

Pick Semrush when search is a main channel and you want one place for research, audits and tracking, especially for an agency or a content team. Skip it when you do SEO only now and then, or when your market is a small language where its data is thin.

Before you choose

Limits on projects, keywords and users

Plans are per account and limited by projects, tracked keywords and rows you can pull. Extra users cost extra. Count your domains, keywords and team members before choosing, and look at where the limits bite first.

Separate toolkits and add-ons

The SEO plans are only part of the product. Local, social, advertising, content and AI visibility have their own pricing pages. Decide which jobs you want in the quote so you do not discover add-ons later.

Data depth in smaller markets

Search volumes for smaller languages and local markets can be thin. Cross-check important keywords in Google Search Console before you build a plan around them.

Alternatives to compare

Ahrefs is the main rival, with a different feel and strength in backlink data. Try both on a real domain during the free trial. For AI answer tracking alone, specialists such as Scrunch AI are cheaper to start with.
