Citation & source tracking

What it is
When people ask an AI answer engine such as ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, the answer often names or links the pages it drew on. Citation and source tracking records those references for prompts you choose. You can see which websites are cited most, whether your own pages appear, and how that changes over time. Ahrefs, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Profound, Scrunch AI and Semrush AI Toolkit are listed as having it.
Why it matters
If AI answers shape how buyers shortlist suppliers, the sources behind those answers matter. Citation data shows which sites the engines trust in your field, so you can see where to publish, which pages to improve and which review sites or directories to appear on. It matters when your buyers research with AI tools. It is less urgent if your market has little AI-driven search. Answers vary between runs, so one snapshot is a weak basis for decisions.
What to check
- Which AI engines are covered, and are the answers collected by testing prompts or estimated.
- How often are prompts re-run, and does the tool show results over time.
- Can you see the exact cited URLs, or only the domain.
- Can you filter by country, language and competitor.
