What it is
Rank tracking means picking a list of search terms and having the tool check, on a schedule, which position your pages hold for each one. The results appear as a history, so you can see that a page moved from position 14 to position 6 after an update. Tools such as Ahrefs, SEMrush and SurferSEO include it, and Google Search Console reports average positions from Google's own data.
Why it matters
Without tracking, you only learn about ranking changes when traffic or leads drop. With it, you can tie a content update, a technical change or a competitor's move to a shift in position, and decide where to spend effort. It matters most when search brings in a meaningful share of your leads or sales. If you publish rarely and search is a minor channel, an occasional manual check may be enough.
What to check
- How often are positions refreshed, and can you trigger a check on demand.
- Can you track by country, city and device, since results differ between them.
- How many keywords are included in the plan, and what happens when you go over the limit.
- Can you compare your positions with named competitors for the same terms.
