SurferSEO
Why SurferSEO
SurferSEO analyses top-ranking pages for your target keywords and provides real-time on-page recommendations through a writing editor and content score. It includes keyword research, topic analysis, content audits, and search-visibility tracking to help you produce SEO-driven content faster. Aimed at content teams, SEO specialists, and agencies, it acts as a coach to improve writing quality and search performance.
What it does
Surfer analyses the pages that rank for your keyword and tells you how to write yours. The core is the Content Editor, which gives a content score and a checklist of terms, headings and length as you write. Around that it offers SERP analysis, content audits, keyword research, internal linking suggestions and topical maps. Newer plans track how your brand shows up in AI search tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and Perplexity.
Why you would need it
Writers produce good articles that rank nowhere, because nobody checked what the top results cover. Without a tool, SEO feedback comes late, from one specialist, as opinion. Briefs take hours, and reviews turn into arguments about terminology.
Surfer makes the guidance visible while the writer works. A content score and a term list give editors a shared reference, so reviews focus on ideas.
Where it fits
It sits in the content workflow, between keyword research and publishing. You bring a keyword from Semrush or Ahrefs, write in the Surfer editor or in Google Docs, and publish to WordPress. Search data from Google Search Console feeds the internal linking tool. It replaces manual competitor reading and spreadsheet briefs. It does not replace a full SEO suite for backlinks and site audits.
What stands out
- The Content Editor, which acts like a coach looking over the writer's shoulder.
- Integrations with WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful and Jasper, and a free Keyword Surfer Chrome extension.
- An official MCP server and a public API for content workflows.
- AI search tracking, so you can see visibility beyond Google.
My take
I have tested Surfer with startup teams and in client consulting, as someone who has run two agencies. In my testing, fresh pages that followed its guidance reached page one on Google, and it let writers produce optimised posts without a specialist guiding every paragraph.
It is not a silver bullet. The score tempts you to chase 100 percent, and forcing every term makes prose stiff. Some suggested terms are off-topic, so editorial judgement stays essential. The SERP analysis and content planning features felt shallow next to dedicated research tools. Surfer AI drafts quickly, but I treat it as a brainstorming aid.
Verdict
Pick it when content is a growth engine and you want a repeatable way to brief and optimise articles. Skip it when your strategy relies on paid ads or occasional blogging, or when you want deep research and backlink data. For that, use a suite such as Semrush or Ahrefs.
Notes
Your note
Before you choose
The score is a guide, not a goal
Chasing a perfect score produces repetitive writing. Set a target range, such as good coverage rather than 100, and let an editor judge the final text. Surfer will not make a weak idea good, but it can make a good article more likely to rank.

API access sits on top plans
The public API is available on the Peace of Mind and Enterprise plans, and requests without access are blocked even with a valid key. The MCP server is listed on AI Search Analytics, Pro, Peace of Mind and Enterprise. Some features are dashboard-only, including internal linking, topical maps, competitor selection, the plagiarism checker and AI tracking.
Plans are split by use
Surfer sells AI search tracking and content optimisation as separate plans with different limits on documents and tracked pages. Work out whether you need to create content, optimise old pages, track AI visibility or all three. Also check how Surfer AI articles are charged, because the existing pay-per-piece model made me use it sparingly.
Alternatives to compare
Clearscope is a similar optimisation tool with a clean interface. Frase is a cheaper option with AI writing built in. Semrush and Ahrefs cover a broader SEO toolkit. There is a free-start option, but the vendor gives no trial length, so check the terms first.
