Browser-based (no download)

What it is
A browser-based webinar tool lets people join by clicking a link and opening it in a normal web browser. There is no program or app to download first. Presenters can usually run the session in the browser too, though some tools still offer or require a desktop app for hosting. BigMarker, Demio, eWebinar, GoTo Webinar, Livestorm, Webex Events and Zoom Webinars are examples of tools that offer a browser option.
Why it matters
Every extra step before a session costs attendance. People using a locked-down work laptop may not be allowed to install software, and others simply do not want to. If joining takes one click, more of the people who registered turn up.
It matters most when you invite prospects, customers or clients outside your company, because you cannot control their devices. If the audience is your own team on managed computers, an app is usually acceptable.
Browser-based does not always mean fully featured. Some functions, such as screen sharing or higher video quality, can differ between browser and app, and some browsers handle them better than others.
What to check
- Which browsers and devices are supported, including phones and tablets.
- Can the presenter host entirely in the browser, or is an app needed for some features.
- Do screen sharing, polls and chat work the same in the browser as in the app.
- Test a join from a locked-down work laptop to see how many steps it takes.
