Spots churn risk early with health scoring, automated plays, and renewal forecasting for subscription businesses.

Why ChurnZero

ChurnZero is an AI-powered customer success platform that combines health scoring, churn-risk alerts, automated plays and in-app messaging with renewal forecasting and survey tools. It helps customer success teams manage retention and expansion at scale, bringing together data from a CRM or billing tool into a single health view.

Best for
Customer success teams at SaaS and subscription companies who need to spot churn risk early and run retention work from one health view.

What it does

ChurnZero is a customer success platform. It pulls in usage and account data, turns it into a health score for each customer, and triggers automated plays when something changes: a task for the account owner, an alert, an email or a message inside your product.

Around that sit customer journeys for onboarding and engagement, in-app communication, renewal forecasting and surveys for NPS, customer effort and satisfaction. It also describes AI agents that act on routine customer success work instead of only advising.

Why you would need it

Churn rarely arrives as a surprise. The signs are there weeks before: usage drops, the champion leaves, tickets pile up, nobody replies. In a growing customer base, nobody can watch every account by memory or spreadsheet.

You feel the pain when renewals come up and you learn about a problem only when the customer cancels. A system that scores accounts and prompts the right action brings that moment forward.

Where it fits

ChurnZero sits beside your CRM and billing system. It lists more than 50 native integrations: Salesforce, HubSpot, Zendesk, Stripe, Chargebee, Recurly, Segment, Mixpanel, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Snowflake and BigQuery. Those feed it usage, support and revenue data. It feeds your team's tasks, alerts and renewal forecasts.

It replaces spreadsheets and ad hoc check-ins. It does not replace your CRM.

What stands out

  • Health scoring across risk indicators you define.
  • Plays that trigger outreach or internal alerts when scores change.
  • In-app messaging and surveys in the same tool.
  • A public REST API based on OData, and an official MCP connection called ChurnZero Connect.

How a first month looks

In the first weeks you connect the CRM and the product usage source, agree what a healthy account looks like and build a first score. Then you add two or three plays you will really act on, such as a low-usage alert and a pre-renewal check-in. Keep it small. A few plays the team follows beat thirty that everyone ignores, and you can add more once the first ones prove useful.

My take

For a SaaS company with a real customer success team, this category pays off, and ChurnZero is a mature option in it. The value is in the plays: a score alone does not keep a customer, but a prompt to the right person at the right moment can.

What I would watch is the data. A health score is only as good as the usage and support data feeding it. If that data is messy, you will spend your first months cleaning it.

Verdict

Pick ChurnZero if you run customer success at scale in a subscription business and have usable data from your product and CRM. Skip it if you have a handful of customers a person can know by name.

Data work comes first

Health scores need product usage, support and billing data. Check before you buy which sources you can connect, how clean they are and who owns the connection. Without that, the tool sits empty.

Alternatives to compare

Gainsight, Vitally, Planhat, Totango and Custify cover the same ground with different weight on size and price. Compare them on your data sources and on how fast your team can run its first play.

Is it too much for you

A team of one or two with a small customer base may be fine with a CRM, a spreadsheet and a calendar reminder for renewals. Buy the platform when volume makes that unworkable.
