Why X Ads

X Ads is the advertising platform of X, formerly Twitter, for running paid campaigns in the timeline, search and profiles. You can target people by interests, keywords, conversations and lookalikes of an account's followers. It suits B2B teams whose buyers are active on X and want to promote content, events or offers to them.

Best for
A B2B brand or media team whose buyers follow live news and launch conversations on X and that wants to test paid reach without a minimum budget.

What it does

X Ads is the advertising platform for X, formerly Twitter. You pay to place posts in the timeline, in search and on profiles. It is a self-serve auction, so you set a budget, pick a target and pay for the ads that run.

The formats include promoted posts, image and carousel ads, dynamic product ads, Amplify video sponsorships and Timeline or Spotlight takeovers. You can target by keyword, follower lookalikes, location and conversation signal.

Why you would need it

You need it when your buyers are on X and the moment matters. A product launch, a news event or a live topic in your category is a window. Organic posts may not reach enough people in that window. Paid reach lets you put your content next to the conversation while it is happening.

It also helps when you want to test a channel cheaply. There is no subscription and no minimum budget, so a small test is possible.

Where it fits

X Ads sits beside Meta, LinkedIn and TikTok in the paid social plan. It feeds clicks and conversions into your site analytics and, through lead forms, into your CRM. It replaces nothing by itself. If you run several ad platforms, you will still want one place for cross-channel reporting.

Dynamic product ads connect to an existing product catalogue, so they suit shops that already keep one.

What stands out

  • Targeting by conversation, keyword and follower lookalikes, which suits real-time topics.
  • No subscription fee and no minimum budget.
  • Native lead forms that can be attached to ads, with submissions exported through the API.
  • An Ads API for campaigns, audiences, creatives and reporting.

My take

I would use X Ads for a specific job: reach people during a live moment, or promote content to an audience that already follows your space. I would not make it the first paid channel for a business without timely content. The platform rewards speed and relevance.

What I would watch is reach. Engagement on the platform has moved a lot in recent years, so test with a small budget and read the results before you scale. Compare the cost per result with LinkedIn Ads and Meta Ads.

Verdict

Pick X Ads if your audience is active on X and you have content tied to timely topics. Skip it if your buyers barely use the platform or if you have no one to react to live moments.

Before you choose

Reach changes with the platform

Ad reach depends on how people use X, and that has shifted over the years. Check your own audience size and engagement before you commit a larger budget. Start small and let the numbers decide.

Fewer integrations than the big ad platforms

The integration list is shorter than on Meta or Google. Check that your analytics tool and CRM can take X conversion data before you plan reporting around it.

API access is gated

The Ads API is not open by default. You submit an access form and wait for a review, which takes up to about three business days. Plan for that if you want reporting or lead export automated.

Compare it with other paid social

Put the same budget idea against LinkedIn Ads, Meta Ads and TikTok Ads. For B2B, LinkedIn is the usual comparison, and X is the cheaper test.
