Why LinkedIn Ads

LinkedIn Ads is LinkedIn's advertising platform for reaching professionals and companies on the network. You can target by job title, industry, company size, and seniority level to reach the decision-makers you need. It suits B2B marketers who want to run lead-generation campaigns and build brand awareness among professionals.

Best for
B2B marketers whose buyers can be found by job title, seniority or company, and who have the budget to pay a higher cost per lead for precise targeting.

What it does

LinkedIn Ads is LinkedIn's self-serve advertising platform, run through Campaign Manager. The formats are Sponsored Content in the feed, Sponsored Messaging sent through LinkedIn Messaging, pay-per-click Text Ads on desktop and Dynamic Ads that personalise with profile data such as a name or company.

You target people by job title, function, industry and more, pick a goal such as leads, brand awareness or event registrations, and set a budget you can change or stop at any time. Conversion tracking and analytics show what the ads produced.

Why you would need it

Most ad platforms target interests and behaviour. That is a poor match when you sell to a head of finance at a mid-sized company, or to procurement leads in one industry. You can describe your buyer precisely, but you cannot reach them by interest.

LinkedIn lets you buy the audience by role and company. You feel the need when you know exactly who should see your offer, and other channels waste most of the spend on the wrong people.

Where it fits

LinkedIn Ads is a paid channel at the top of the funnel. Traffic goes to a landing page, for example one built in Leadpages, and leads move into your CRM. Conversions flow back to LinkedIn through a website tag, uploads or the Conversions API, so the platform can optimise for the right results. Tools like Leadinfo can show which companies visited after an ad.

It sits next to Google Ads and Meta Ads, which reach other parts of the buyer's day, and next to organic LinkedIn activity.

What stands out

  • Targeting by professional attributes, which few platforms offer at this level.
  • Four ad formats, from feed ads to direct messages.
  • Several ways to send conversions back: a tag, manual upload or a continuous API feed.
  • A documented Marketing API for campaign management, reporting and lead sync.

My take

The targeting is the reason to use it, and it is hard to match elsewhere for B2B. A tight audience of the right roles makes a small test budget meaningful.

The cost is the other side. Cost per click and per lead tends to run higher than on consumer platforms, and there is no published rate card, so you learn real prices by running a campaign. It also needs ongoing attention to bids and audiences. It is not a set-and-forget channel.

Verdict

Pick LinkedIn Ads if your buyers are identifiable by role or company and a lead is worth a higher cost. Skip it if you sell to consumers, or if you cannot afford a test budget long enough to learn.

Before you choose

Cost per lead runs high

Because the audience is narrow and valuable, clicks and leads usually cost more than on consumer platforms. Work out what a lead is worth to you before you start, and set a test budget that you can afford to lose.

No published rate card

The vendor describes flexible pricing and bidding without a fixed rate card or minimum budget on its product page. You will see real costs only in a live account. Run a small test and watch cost per lead before you commit a larger budget.

It needs ongoing management

Audiences, bids and creatives need regular review. If nobody will own the campaigns, results will fade. A narrow audience also means small volumes, so check the audience size before you launch.

Compare it with other paid channels

Google Ads catches people who are already searching. Meta Ads and Reddit Ads reach broader audiences for less. Many B2B teams run LinkedIn alongside these, and compare the cost per qualified lead, not the cost per click.
