Why Reddit Ads

Reddit Ads is the advertising platform for running paid campaigns on Reddit with tracking of spend, impressions and clicks. It is aimed at businesses and marketers who want to reach Reddit communities with targeted advertising. Ad performance is measurable by account, allowing management of spend across multiple campaigns.

Best for
B2B and consumer brands whose buyers research products in Reddit communities, and that can write ads that sound like a contribution to the thread instead of a banner.

What it does

Reddit Ads is the self-serve advertising platform for Reddit. You create campaigns in Reddit Ads Manager, choose a goal such as sales, leads, traffic or app installs, pick formats and target by community and interest. The formats include image, video and carousel ads and Conversation Ads that sit in the flow of a thread.

Reporting and measurement tools show spend, impressions, clicks and conversions per account and campaign. Reddit also offers Reddit Pro, a free tool for tracking keywords and engaging with conversations.

Why you would need it

Most paid channels reach people when they scroll. Reddit reaches them when they ask a question. People post about a tool they are choosing, a problem they have or a product they are comparing. If your buyer is in those threads, the ad meets them at the moment of decision.

You feel the need when your Google and Meta costs keep rising and the audience is saturated. A different channel with different intent can lower your blended cost.

Where it fits

Reddit Ads sits beside Google Ads, Meta Ads and LinkedIn Ads in the media plan. Spend goes in through Ads Manager, and conversions come back through the Reddit pixel or the API. The data then goes to your analytics and CRM.

It replaces nothing. It is an extra channel, and it needs reporting that compares it with the others, for example in Google Analytics or Looker Studio.

What stands out

  • Targeting by community and interest, down to a specific subreddit.
  • Ad formats built for Reddit, including Conversation Ads.
  • A public Ads API with OAuth2, for reporting and campaign management.
  • No subscription. You pay for ad spend only, and there is a free tool, Reddit Pro, for organic engagement.

My take

I would test Reddit if your product is discussed there. Technical, niche and hobby topics do well, and the audience is used to long, honest answers. Ads that read like marketing copy tend to get ignored.

What I would watch is reach and tone. The audience is smaller than Google or Meta, so it is rarely your first channel. The effort is in the creative: you need to know which communities matter and write for them. Start with a small, capped daily budget and learn which subreddits convert.

Verdict

Pick Reddit Ads if your buyers talk about your category in identifiable communities and you can write native-sounding ads. Skip it if you sell to a broad audience with no clear community, or if you do not have time to adapt creative to each audience.

Before you choose

It is ad spend only

There is no subscription. Cost is set by an auction, with a small minimum daily budget per ad group. Treat the first campaigns as tests with a fixed cap. New advertisers are sometimes offered ad credit, so check the current offer in Ads Manager.

Tone matters more than targeting

Communities have their own culture and moderators. An ad that ignores that gets downvoted in the comments. Read the subreddits you target before you write, and test several creatives.

Measurement needs setup

Conversion tracking depends on the Reddit pixel and your own analytics. Set both up before you spend, and compare Reddit with your other channels in one report. Attribution for a research channel is often indirect, so look at assisted conversions as well.

Compare it with other channels

LinkedIn Ads reaches people by job title and is expensive. Meta Ads and Google Ads reach more people. Reddit is the choice for topic-led intent. Pick one clear test against one of them, with the same budget and goal.
