Manages recurring billing and payment recovery across multiple currencies and gateways for subscription businesses.

Why Recurly

Recurly is a subscription management and recurring-billing platform that handles plan creation, payment processing across multiple gateways and currencies, and automated revenue recognition. It is built for subscription and digital commerce businesses handling high transaction volumes that want sophisticated billing automation and payment recovery. The dunning and churn-recovery features automatically retry failed payments to reduce involuntary subscription cancellations.

Best for
Subscription and digital commerce businesses with real billing volume, such as growing SaaS companies, that need failed-payment recovery, several gateways and billing handled outside their own code.

What it does

Recurly is subscription billing software. You define plans, add-ons, coupons and pricing models, such as fixed, usage-based, tiered or hybrid. Recurly then creates the invoices, collects the payments through the gateways you connect and manages the subscription lifecycle: trials, upgrades, pauses, renewals and cancellations.

It also covers dunning, which is the retry and email logic for failed payments, hosted checkout and account pages, and a subscriber wallet. Separate products add churn prevention and revenue recognition.

Why you would need it

Subscription billing looks simple until you run it. Cards fail, customers change plans mid-cycle, tax and currency rules differ by country and finance wants revenue recognised correctly. Building all of that yourself takes engineers away from your product and still leaves gaps.

You feel the pain when involuntary churn climbs, when finance keeps fixing invoices by hand or when a new pricing model needs a developer. A billing platform takes those jobs over, so a failed card gets retried and the customer gets the right email without anyone stepping in.

Where it fits

Recurly sits between your product and your payment gateways, and it feeds your finance stack. It has documented integrations with Xero, QuickBooks Online, Oracle NetSuite and Avalara or Vertex for tax. On the customer side it connects to Salesforce, Zendesk, Braze and Mailchimp, and it exports data to Snowflake.

It replaces home-built billing code, or the basic billing features of a payment processor. If you only use Stripe, its billing product, Stripe Billing, is the simpler place to start.

What stands out

  • Dunning events and retry logic built for subscriptions, with webhooks for every stage.
  • Several pricing models, plus coupons, gift cards and free trial management.
  • A broad webhook set in JSON and XML, with retries and signature verification.
  • Optional add-ons: Engage for churn prevention and RevRec for revenue recognition.

My take

Recurly makes sense when billing is a real function of your company. The recovery logic and the lifecycle controls earn their place once you have thousands of subscribers and failed payments cost you real revenue.

What I would watch is fit. The pricing model is built around billing volume, which suits larger businesses better than a small start-up. A small team might be better served by Stripe Billing, Chargebee or Paddle, depending on how much tax and gateway work it wants to hand off.

Verdict

Pick Recurly if subscriptions are your main revenue, your volume is meaningful and you want recovery, gateway flexibility and revenue reporting handled by a dedicated platform. Skip it if you are small, early or happy with your payment processor's own billing tool.

Before you choose

Pricing is built on billing volume

The Starter plan has a base fee plus a percentage of billing volume. All-Access is priced as a percentage of volume, billed annually, with a minimum volume. Engage and RevRec are add-ons with their own prices. Work out your billing volume first, because it decides which plan applies and what you pay.

The MCP server is for documentation, not your data

Recurly's Compass MCP server is in early access and answers documentation questions and writes code examples. It does not expose your customer or billing data. Do not plan an AI workflow on it that needs live billing records.

Check your gateway, tax and accounting setup

Recurly supports several gateways and has integrations for tax and accounting tools. List the gateway, the tax engine and the accounting package you use, and confirm each one is on the plan you would buy. Migrating existing subscribers and stored cards also takes planning.

Compare it with the alternatives

Stripe Billing is the lightest route if you already use Stripe. Chargebee and Paddle compete on features and on how much tax handling they take over. Compare them on dunning, reporting and how much your finance team must do by hand.
