Focus time protection

Reserve focus time on your calendar and keep meetings from being booked over it.

What it is

Focus time protection marks blocks of your calendar as unavailable for meetings, so other people cannot book into them. Some tools create the blocks automatically around your tasks, while others give you a dedicated focus-time event type that you set yourself. Google Calendar and Motion are examples of tools that list it.

Why it matters

Calendars fill up with other people's meetings first, which leaves the real work to evenings. Protected time makes your priorities visible and defends them. It matters most for managers, makers and anyone whose calendar is open to colleagues or clients. If you work alone and control your own diary, you may not need it.

What to check

  • Does it block bookings through your scheduling links as well as invitations from colleagues.
  • Can focus blocks be recurring, or do you need to create each one.
  • Can it silence notifications or set a status during focus time.
  • Can you override a block when something urgent comes up.
