Transcription accuracy

What it is
Transcription accuracy describes how closely the written text matches what was said. Vendors usually quote it as a percentage of correctly recognised words, or as a word error rate. The figure depends on audio quality, accents, background noise, speakers talking over each other and industry terms. For example, a clear one-to-one call transcribes better than a noisy room with six people.
Why it matters
Meeting notes, call reviews and sales coaching all rely on the transcript being trustworthy. A few wrong words are tolerable in a summary, but a wrong name, number or quote can cause real mistakes. Accuracy matters most when you share transcripts with clients or keep them as a record. For rough personal notes, speed and price may count for more.
What to check
- Is the figure measured, and on what kind of audio and languages?
- Test it on your own recordings, including your accents and jargon.
- Can you add custom words, such as product names, to improve results?
- How easy is it to correct the text and play back the audio beside it?
