OptinMonster

Pop-ups, exit-intent offers, floating bars and targeting rules that turn website visitors into subscribers.

Why OptinMonster

OptinMonster is lead generation software that shows pop-ups, floating bars, fullscreen offers and other campaigns on your website. Display rules decide who sees what, based on behaviour, page, location or device, and exit-intent detection catches visitors who are about to leave. It suits sites with enough traffic to be worth converting.

Best for
Marketers, bloggers and online stores with steady website traffic who want to turn more visitors into email subscribers or buyers using targeted pop-ups and offers.

What it does

OptinMonster is a tool for capturing leads on your website. You build campaigns such as lightbox pop-ups, floating bars, fullscreen welcome gates and coupon wheels, decide where and when they show, and send the sign-ups to your email platform or CRM.

Display rules do the targeting. You can trigger a campaign by behaviour, location, device, referral source, cart activity or visit history, without writing code. Exit-intent detection shows an offer when someone moves to leave.

Why you would need it

Most visitors leave without doing anything. The built-in form in your email tool shows the same message to everyone, and it does not know whether the visitor is new, returning, about to leave or reading a blog post.

A targeting layer lets you show a newsletter offer to a reader, a cart reminder to a shopper and nothing at all to someone who already signed up. The same traffic then produces more subscribers.

Where it fits

It sits on your website, between your traffic and your email or CRM tool. Your site feeds it page views and behaviour, and it passes contacts on to the tools you already use. It replaces the basic form builder in your email platform and a one-off pop-up plug-in.

It works with WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Squarespace, Wix and any HTML website, and the vendor lists more than fifty integrations.

What stands out

  • Exit-intent detection and display rules, so the right offer shows at the right time.
  • A/B testing of campaign variations, with reporting by campaign.
  • Pricing based on campaign impressions, not on your website's pageviews.
  • Sub-accounts, role-based access and custom branding on the Growth plan, which suit agencies.

My take

I would pick OptinMonster when a site has real traffic and the email list is the bottleneck. Targeting rules are the reason to choose it over a simple form.

What I would watch is the limit on impressions. Campaigns that show on every page use impressions quickly, so start with a few well-targeted ones. There is also no free plan, so use the money-back window to test it.

How it compares

A built-in form in an email platform is fine for a simple newsletter box. OptinMonster is worth the extra step when you need rules, tests and reporting by campaign, and when design and timing matter more than the form itself.

Verdict

Pick it when you have steady traffic and want to convert more of it with targeted offers. Skip it when your site gets very little traffic, or when your email platform's own forms already do the job.

Before you choose

Impressions set your plan

Plans are sized by campaign impressions and sites. The vendor says it will not turn off your campaigns if you go over the limit. Still, check how many impressions your busiest pages create, so the plan fits.

Annual billing by default

New plans bill annually and renew automatically. Monthly billing exists but costs noticeably more. The first-year price is an introductory offer and the renewal price is higher, so compare the renewal figure.

Pop-ups can annoy people

Aggressive pop-ups hurt trust. Limit how often a visitor sees a campaign, and test with and without exit-intent.

Alternatives to compare

Justuno offers similar capability for stores. Leadpages is worth a look if you want dedicated capture pages as well. Privy is the other name to check for e-commerce sites.
