Freshchat
Why Freshchat
Freshchat unifies web chat, email, SMS, WhatsApp and social channels into a single agent inbox. It integrates AI chatbots powered by Freddy AI to handle common customer queries automatically. It is built for support and sales teams wanting omnichannel customer engagement alongside other Freshworks products.
What it does
Freshchat is a customer messaging tool. It puts live chat on your website and app, and brings other messaging channels into one agent workspace. You can build AI-driven bots that answer common questions on any of those channels. Agents see context such as past purchases and open issues. You can also start conversations proactively, for example when a visitor looks at a pricing page for some time. Reports cover team performance and bot effectiveness.
Why you would need it
Customers want quick answers and they do not want to send an email and wait. Your team wants fewer repeated questions and less switching between inboxes. Without a messaging tool, chat requests land in personal accounts, WhatsApp on someone's phone or an email thread.
Freshchat gives you one place for conversations, with history. Bots deal with the simple questions, and agents handle the rest with context.
Where it fits
Freshchat sits at the front of your support or sales process. Your website and app feed it with visitors, and it feeds Freshdesk or another helpdesk with conversations that need a ticket. The vendor positions Freshdesk Omni as the upgrade for advanced ticketing and knowledge bases. It replaces a standalone chat widget and scattered messaging accounts.
What stands out
- Bots on many channels. You build a bot once and deploy it on your website, app and messaging channels.
- Agent context. Past purchases, open issues and conversations from other channels appear in one view.
- Proactive messages. You can reach out to visitors before they ask for help.
- Strong APIs. A customer quoted by the vendor chose it for the APIs, so they could build their own chat client.
My take
I'd pick Freshchat when you already use Freshdesk, or when you want a chat tool that is affordable to start with. The free plan and the 14-day trial make it easy to test on your own site.
What I'd watch is the channel set per plan. Messaging channels, bots and journeys can sit on different tiers, so check what you get. Also, bots need maintenance. Decide who reviews the transcripts and corrects wrong answers, otherwise the bot quietly annoys customers. If you want a different product to compare, look at Intercom and Zendesk.
Verdict
Pick Freshchat when you want chat and messaging with bots in one inbox, and your support runs in Freshworks. Skip it when you need advanced ticketing on its own, or when your team does not have time to maintain a bot.
Notes
Your note
Before you choose
Plans differ by channel and bot features
There is a free plan, and paid plans are charged per agent. The vendor shows prices billed annually. Features such as messaging channels, bots and journeys sit on different plans, so list what you need before you pick one.

Bots need a person
An AI bot is only as good as its content and review. Plan time to read conversations, fix wrong answers and decide when a human takes over. Measure resolution and customer satisfaction, not only how many chats the bot handled.
Helpdesk fit
Freshchat is built to work with Freshdesk. If your tickets live in another tool, check that the connection does what you need. Intercom, Zendesk and Help Scout bundle chat and ticketing in other ways.
Data and privacy
Chat transcripts hold personal data. Check where data is stored, how long it is kept and how you handle deletion requests, especially if you serve customers in Europe.
