Passkey / FIDO2
On this pageWhat it is
What it is
A passkey is a modern replacement for a password. Instead of a secret you type, your device holds a cryptographic key and opens it with your fingerprint, face or device PIN. FIDO2 is the standard behind it, and it also covers physical security keys. A password manager with passkey support can store passkeys for you and fill them in, and it can be opened with such a key. 1Password and LastPass are examples.
Why it matters
Passwords are the most common way accounts are broken into, because they can be guessed, reused or stolen through fake login pages. A passkey cannot be typed into a fake site, so phishing becomes much harder. Logging in also gets faster for staff.
It matters for companies that hold customer data or financial access. The benefit depends on the websites you use, since each service must support passkeys too. Adoption is growing but not universal, so passwords will remain for a while.
What to check
- Can the tool store passkeys, or does it only support hardware keys for opening the vault?
- Do passkeys sync across a person's devices and browsers?
- Can an admin require passkeys or security keys for all staff?
- What is the recovery process if someone loses their device?
