Visitor targeting rules

What it is
Visitor targeting rules decide which pop-ups, banners or forms appear for which people. You set conditions in a visual editor, such as "only show this to visitors from Google Ads on mobile" or "only to people who have viewed three product pages". Other common conditions are country, new or returning visitor and whether someone is already a subscriber. Justuno, OptinMonster and Privy are examples of tools that offer rules like these.
Why it matters
A pop-up shown to everyone is irritating to most people and relevant to a few. Targeting lets you show a first-order discount to new visitors, a different message to returning customers and nothing at all to people who have already signed up. That means fewer annoyed visitors and better results from each campaign.
You need this once your site has more than one type of visitor or more than one offer. A very small site with one message and little traffic can manage with a single simple campaign.
The quality of the rules matters more than their number. Combining several conditions and excluding people who should not see a message is where the real value sits.
What to check
- Can you combine conditions with both "and" and "or", and exclude groups of visitors.
- Which conditions are included: source, location, device, behaviour, and custom data from your own site.
- Is any of it limited to higher plans, or does every plan include the full rule set.
- Can you preview a campaign as a particular type of visitor before it goes live.
