Moneybird vs PayPal

Moneybird logovsPayPal logo
Moneybird invoices, keeps the books and prepares VAT for Dutch small businesses. PayPal is a payment method with links and invoices. For most small Dutch teams, Moneybird is the system and PayPal an option inside it.

The verdict

For a small Dutch or Belgian team, I'd pick Moneybird to run invoicing and bookkeeping. You get invoices, VAT and a clear view of what you owe. Then add PayPal as one of the payment methods if your customers want it. Moneybird lists payment connections for PayPal, alongside Stripe and Mollie, so the two work together.

I'd pick PayPal on its own only if you need to be paid fast with a link, you have no bookkeeping needs yet, or you sell mostly to consumers who trust it. It is not built for complex billing or Dutch bookkeeping.

Who each is for

Moneybird logo

Choose Moneybird if…

Pick Moneybird if you are a Dutch or Belgian freelancer or small company and want invoicing, bookkeeping and VAT in one simple product. Bookkeeping becomes a short routine instead of a quarterly project, and your accountant can have access.

Payments by iDEAL, QR code, direct debit and credit card are built in. It is not for multi-entity accounting or an international set-up, and outside the Netherlands and Belgium you should test whether the tax features fit. There is no free plan, but there is a trial. Plans differ mainly in how many bank transactions you can process.

PayPal logo

Choose PayPal if…

Pick PayPal if you run an online shop, freelance or run a small business and want to accept PayPal and cards, or share a payment link or invoice without building anything. It removes friction at checkout for customers who prefer to pay with an account they already have.

There is no subscription, but a percentage and a fixed amount are charged per transaction, and the rate depends on country, method and volume. Seller protection comes with conditions. It does not do bookkeeping or VAT returns, so your payments still need to reach your accounting tool.
