Chargebee vs Polar

Chargebee logovsPolar logo
Chargebee suits finance-led teams with complex subscription pricing who keep their own gateways. Polar is a developer-friendly merchant of record with usage metering and tax handled. Small software teams will usually find Polar easier.

The verdict

For a small software team selling worldwide, I would pick Polar. The setup is a checkout link, a webhook and a few lines of code, you can start with no monthly fee, and you do not run tax compliance yourself. The trade-off is a percentage plus a fixed amount on each sale.

Pick Chargebee if you have a finance or revenue team, custom enterprise terms, quotes for larger deals, or a need for revenue recognition, and you want to keep your own gateway. Be ready to own the tax side.

If you want to be the seller of record yourself, skip Polar. If your billing is a few flat plans, skip Chargebee.

Who each is for

Chargebee logo

Choose Chargebee if…

Pick Chargebee if your pricing is part of your strategy and a finance team wants billing, quoting and revenue recognition from one vendor. It supports tiered, volume, stairstep, usage-based and flat-fee models, works with more than 40 payment gateways, and follows ASC 606 and IFRS 15 for revenue recognition.

The cost is complexity. It is sold as several products priced separately, and some plans carry a fee that scales with invoiced volume. Scope tends to grow with the bill, so start with billing. Tax and compliance remain yours.

Polar logo

Choose Polar if…

Pick Polar if you are a developer or small software team selling subscriptions, licences or usage-based services worldwide and want tax compliance handled from day one. Meters, prepaid credits and cost insights suit pricing by tokens, calls or compute. Licence keys, file downloads and GitHub access can be delivered after purchase.

It has SDKs, framework adapters, a sandbox and an official MCP server that uses OAuth. Remember that it is the seller, so it has an acceptable use policy, account reviews and a list of supported countries. Usage billing also needs clean events from your product, so plan that design first.
