Canva vs Microsoft PowerPoint

Canva logovsMicrosoft PowerPoint logo
Canva is a design tool for decks, social posts and ads with brand kits. PowerPoint is presentation software and a file format everyone opens. One is for visuals, the other for the deck itself.

The verdict

If most of your work is social posts, ads and visual assets, with the occasional deck, pick Canva. The free plan is generous and the speed from idea to finished asset is hard to beat.

If your work is sales decks, board packs and reports that travel as files, or you already pay for Microsoft 365, pick PowerPoint.

These tools sit together better than they compete. Many teams make visuals in Canva and place them in a PowerPoint master deck. If you can only pick one, ask what leaves the building most often. Posts and ads point to Canva. Decks and proposals point to PowerPoint.

Who each is for

Choose Canva if…

Pick Canva if you are a marketer, founder or small team that makes a steady stream of visuals without a designer. Brand kits keep colours, fonts and logos consistent, a content planner handles social scheduling and bulk creation makes variants from a data file. Folders, comments and approvals on the Business plan suit a team that writes, approves and schedules.

The free plan covers a lot. Watch for sameness from popular templates, and for the AI allowance on your plan.

Skip it as your main tool if every deck must stay a native PowerPoint file.

Microsoft PowerPoint logo

Choose Microsoft PowerPoint if…

Pick PowerPoint if you present to customers, investors or a board, or if your company already runs on Microsoft 365. Customers almost always accept the file, and several people can edit together in the browser, with files in OneDrive. The web version is free with a Microsoft account.

It is also the safe choice when the deck must work offline on a plane or travel as an attachment.

PowerPoint does not stop people changing fonts, logos and numbers. Set up slide masters, keep one shared master deck for sales and review pricing slides on a fixed schedule.
