Botpress
Why Botpress
Building AI agents to handle customer support conversations automates routine tickets and reduces hand-offs. The platform uses a visual flow builder and connects agents to knowledge bases, helpdesks like Zendesk and Intercom, and messaging channels including WhatsApp and Slack. Developers and support teams in SaaS, retail and fintech use it to resolve issues independently and escalate complex conversations to humans.
What it does
Botpress is an AI agent platform, now focused on customer support. You build agents that read a knowledge base, take multi-step actions such as refunds or account updates under set conditions, and hand over to a human with the full conversation history.
You build in Botpress Studio, a visual builder, or with a natural language builder. Agents run on webchat, WhatsApp, Slack and Viber, and connect to Zendesk, Intercom, HubSpot and Salesforce. The vendor also offers Botpress Desk, its own AI helpdesk.
Why you would need it
You feel the pain when the support inbox grows faster than the team. Most tickets follow a pattern, such as order status, password help or a plan change, and a person answers them one by one. Hiring more people for repeat questions is slow and costly.
An agent that resolves the repeat tickets, and passes the rest to a person with context, gives your team time for the hard cases.
Where it fits
Botpress sits beside your helpdesk. It takes the first line of conversations and routes what it cannot resolve into the ticketing tool you already use. The vendor says you keep your helpdesk and tickets stay intact. If you have no helpdesk, Botpress Desk is an option.
It competes with other agent-building platforms, such as Relevance AI and Lindy, and with the AI features inside helpdesks such as Intercom and Zendesk.
What stands out
- Agents that act, not only answer: refunds, account changes and multi-step workflows.
- Knowledge bases, tables and escalation rules built in, with a hot handoff to a human.
- A free plan to test an agent before paying, and conversation-based pricing published for the main tiers.
- A documented API with chat, admin, files, tables and runtime sections.
- The vendor markets itself as having no per-seat cost and AI usage included.
My take
Botpress suits a team that wants to build a support agent rather than buy a finished one. The vendor says no engineering is needed to go live. I would still expect a reliable agent to need technical setup time, careful knowledge base work and testing on real tickets.
The cost model is conversation based, so volume matters. A busy support desk can climb tiers fast. I would test on real past tickets during the free plan and see how many the agent resolves before judging it.
Verdict
Pick Botpress if you have a helpdesk, real ticket volume and someone technical who can build and tune an agent. Skip it if you want a no-effort chatbot that you configure in an afternoon.
Notes
Your note
Before you choose
Volume drives cost
Pricing is by conversation. Take last quarter's ticket and chat volume and map it onto the tiers before you commit. Enterprise pricing is not published.

Setup takes work
Even with a visual builder, a reliable agent needs a clean knowledge base, clear escalation rules and testing. Plan time for it, and plan who maintains the agent after launch.
Check seat terms
The vendor says there is no per-seat cost, yet the pricing notes mention charges for extra seats on the Plus plan. Confirm how many seats your plan includes before you add your whole support team.
Alternatives to compare
Compare the built-in AI in Intercom and Zendesk, and agent builders such as Relevance AI and Microsoft Copilot Studio. Botpress makes most sense if you want control over agent behaviour and channels.
