How to automate Xero

Native integrations

Xero connects to payments, expenses, payroll and e-commerce tools through its app store, and the US plans offer payroll powered by Gusto as an add-on. Bank feeds are built in. Check the app store for your sales tool before you plan a flow.

Automation idea: create a Xero invoice when a deal is won in your CRM, and update the deal when the invoice is paid.

API and webhooks

Xero has a developer platform with an Accounting API and webhooks for pushing events to your own systems. Apps sign in with OAuth 2.0. Use the API to create invoices, read contacts and pull reports.

Automation idea: send an alert to Slack when a large invoice becomes overdue, and create a task for the owner.

MCP server

Xero publishes an official MCP server on GitHub under its XeroAPI organisation. It runs locally, connects to Xero with OAuth 2.0 custom connections or a bearer token, and offers more than forty commands covering contacts, the chart of accounts, invoices and payroll.

Automation idea: ask an AI assistant for a list of unpaid invoices older than thirty days and draft the reminder emails for you to review.
