What it is
OpenAI officially hosts a public, documentation-only MCP server (streamable HTTP) at developers.openai.com/mcp (docs page: https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/docs-mcp/). It provides read-only access to OpenAI developer documentation (search + page content), requires no authentication, and does not call the OpenAI API on your behalf. It can also be connected as an 'mcp' tool in the Responses API (server_url) and via the Agents API; other remote MCP servers may require an OAuth access token. A third-party OpenAI MCP server also exists (mcp.ai lists one with 126 tools via OAuth 2.0).

How to automate OpenAI API

API and webhooks

OpenAI documents a REST API with official client libraries, and webhooks for long-running work such as background responses. A good first build: when a new support ticket arrives, send the text to the API, get back a category and a draft reply, and write both into your helpdesk.

MCP server

OpenAI runs an official Docs MCP server at developers.openai.com/mcp. It is read-only and only covers OpenAI documentation, so it does not call the API for you. It is still useful: connect it to Claude or a coding agent so the agent writes API code against the current docs. The API itself can also call remote MCP servers as tools.

No-code automation

Zapier has a ChatGPT app, which is the quickest way to try an AI step without code, for example summarising a form submission before it reaches your CRM. Check whether Make or n8n has an OpenAI module for the exact action you need before you plan a flow around it.
