Answers questions, writes, researches, analyses and codes via web and desktop apps with built-in search and grounding.

Why Claude

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant for writing, research, analysis and coding, available via web and desktop apps. It offers built-in web search, document and project grounding, and connectors via the Model Context Protocol to extend capabilities. It serves individuals and teams using AI for knowledge work and custom integrations.

Best for
Founders and small teams who want an AI assistant for long documents, writing, research, analysis and coding, with connectors to the tools they already use.

What it does

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. You use it on the web, in desktop and mobile apps, and it writes, researches with web search, analyses documents and spreadsheets, creates files and helps with code. Projects keep context, files and instructions together for ongoing work. Artifacts let you create documents, slides and designs you can edit and share.

Connectors, based on the Model Context Protocol, link it to apps such as Slack, Gmail, Salesforce and databases. Paid plans add Claude Code, more usage and memory of past conversations.

Why you would need it

Most of the work in a small company is thinking and writing: briefs, proposals, research, analysis, replies and plans. The first draft is slow and the context is scattered over many files.

The pain is felt when you have a long document to digest, a decision to structure or a pile of notes to turn into something usable. An assistant that can hold all of that in one conversation saves hours.

Where it fits

Claude sits next to your tools and, through connectors, can reach into them. You feed it documents, data and instructions. It feeds your documents, your CRM notes and your code. It replaces first drafts, manual summaries and a lot of searching.

Compare it with ChatGPT and Gemini. If you build with the API instead, see Anthropic API.

What stands out

  • Projects that keep files and instructions together for ongoing work.
  • Connectors to external apps through MCP, so it can read and act in your own systems.
  • Artifacts for creating documents, slides and designs inside the conversation.
  • Plans for individuals, teams and enterprises, with no model training on your content by default.

My take

Claude is the assistant I would try first for writing, long documents and structured thinking. The way it handles a pile of source material is the main reason. Connectors matter more over time: once it can read your CRM or your docs, you stop pasting.

What I would watch is the same as with any model. It can be wrong with confidence, and you still need to check numbers and sources. Usage limits on lower plans can also interrupt heavy work.

Verdict

Pick Claude if you do a lot of writing, research or analysis and want an assistant that works with your own files and tools. Skip the paid tiers if you use it a few times a week, since the free plan may be enough.

Before you choose

Usage limits by plan

Plans differ in how much you can do before you hit a limit. Free is for light use. The higher individual plans give much more usage. If you work in it all day, test your real workload on a paid plan before you commit a team to it.

Verify the output

Like any model it can state wrong things in a confident tone. Treat answers as a draft and check facts, numbers and quotes, especially for customers or legal matters.

Data and admin

Anthropic states that content is not used for model training by default. Team and enterprise plans add central billing, SSO and admin controls, and the enterprise plan adds role-based access and audit logs. If you handle client data, read the terms and choose a plan with the controls you need.

Alternatives

ChatGPT and Gemini cover much of the same ground, and Gemini fits Google Workspace users best. Run the same five real tasks through each for a week and keep the one your team actually opens.
