Privacy, consent and AI governance software that manages cookie consent, data requests and compliance work.

Why OneTrust

OneTrust is a platform for privacy, consent and governance. It covers cookie consent, privacy automation, third-party risk, tech risk and compliance, and AI governance. It is used by privacy, legal and security teams, mostly in mid-sized and large organisations, and is sold on a quote basis.

Best for
Privacy, legal and security teams in mid-sized and large organisations that need cookie consent, data subject requests, vendor risk and AI governance managed in one platform.

What it does

OneTrust is a governance platform with several modules: Consent and Preferences, Privacy Automation, AI Governance, Tech Risk and Compliance, and Third-Party Management. The best-known part is cookie consent, which detects cookies and trackers on your website, shows banners in many languages and applies rules by region.

Why you would need it

You feel the pain when privacy work spreads across spreadsheets and inboxes. Marketing runs trackers nobody has listed, legal answers data requests by email, and security sends vendor questionnaires by hand. A platform gives you one record of what data you hold, who processes it and what consent you have.

Where it fits

OneTrust sits between your website, your marketing stack and your compliance process. The consent banner controls which tags fire on your site, and the records feed audits. It competes with simpler tools such as Cookiebot for the consent part, and with other privacy platforms for the wider programme. Its integrations page lists over a hundred connections across databases, data discovery, privacy and marketing automation.

The modules

The platform is sold as modules, so you can start with the one that matches your most urgent need.

  • AI Governance: control and compliance across the AI lifecycle.
  • Consent and Preferences: cookie consent and preference management.
  • Data Use Governance: policy enforcement on how data is used.
  • Privacy Automation: managing the data lifecycle and privacy requests.
  • Tech Risk and Compliance: risk and compliance work for technology.
  • Third-Party Management: vendor intake through mitigation.

What stands out

  • Cookie detection with a large library of pre-categorised cookies and geolocation rules for banners.
  • Support for more than 250 languages in consent banners.
  • An AI Governance module that maps AI risk to frameworks such as the EU AI Act, NIST and ISO 42001.
  • A REST API and developer portal.
  • Modules you can add as the privacy programme grows.

My take

I would pick OneTrust when privacy is a programme, with a team behind it, and not a banner on a website. It makes sense for companies that sell to enterprise buyers who ask detailed security and privacy questions.

For a small website that only needs a compliant cookie banner, it is more than you need. A focused tool is faster to set up and easier to afford.

Verdict

Pick it when you need consent, privacy operations and vendor or AI governance in one system, and have someone to own it. Skip it when a simple cookie banner covers your need.

Before you choose

Quote-based pricing

Pricing is based on admin users and AI inventory and is given on request. Ask for a written quote that covers the modules you need now and the ones you may add later.

Setup and ownership

A platform of this size needs an owner. Plan time for configuration, data mapping and training. Without someone responsible, it turns into one more unused system.

More than a cookie banner needs

If you only need website consent, compare Cookiebot and other focused tools on price, setup time and the number of languages supported.

Module overlap

The modules overlap with tools you may already own, such as vendor risk or security questionnaires. Map what you have before you add another system.
