How to automate Microsoft Excel

Native integrations

Excel works with OneDrive and SharePoint, and Office Add-ins let other tools put task panes inside Excel. Many business tools export to Excel format or write to workbooks.

Automation idea: export your weekly CRM pipeline to a workbook that already contains your formulas and charts, so the report is ready when the file lands.

API and webhooks

Microsoft Graph provides REST APIs for Excel workbooks stored in OneDrive for Business, SharePoint or group drives. You can read and change worksheets, tables, ranges and charts, using standard Microsoft sign-in and the Files read and write permissions.

Automation idea: append every new lead from a form to a table in a shared workbook, and let a PivotTable summarise the week.

No-code automation

Office Scripts let you record Excel actions and edit them as code, and they can run through Power Automate. Power Automate also has an Excel Online (Business) connector for working with Excel files in OneDrive for Business and SharePoint. Check whether a Zapier or Make connector exists for the tools you want to feed into Excel.

Automation idea: every morning, clean the new CSV from your accounting tool with a recorded script and refresh your dashboard sheet.
