Audience targeting for experiments

What it is
Audience targeting limits a test to a defined group of visitors instead of everyone who lands on the page. The group can be defined by device type, country, the campaign or site they came from, whether they are new or returning, or what they have done before. For example, you could test a new offer only for mobile visitors from paid search, and leave everyone else on the current page. Convert Experiences, OmniConvert, Optimizely and VWO are examples of tools listed with this feature.
Why it matters
Different groups behave differently, and mixing them can hide a result that only affects one of them. Targeting also stops you from changing the page for people it was never meant for. You need it when your traffic is varied or when a change is relevant to one segment. Keep in mind that a narrow group means fewer visitors, so the test takes longer to reach a clear answer.
What to check
- Which conditions can you target by: device, location, source, cookies, behaviour or your own data?
- Can you combine several conditions in one group?
- Can you see results broken down by group after a test on everyone?
- Is there a warning when the chosen group is too small to test?
