Freedom vs Google Calendar

Freedom blocks distracting apps and sites on all your devices, while Google Calendar organises meetings and shared schedules. They solve different problems, and Calendar is the one most teams need first.

The verdict

If you have to pick one, and you are on Google Workspace or deal with many outsiders, I'd pick Google Calendar. Nearly everyone can open a Google invitation, and a team needs one shared view of who is free. If your calendar is already fine and you lose hours to social feeds and news sites, I'd pick Freedom. A calendar block labelled deep work does nothing when your phone is in your hand. Freedom is the part that enforces it. For most founders the sensible answer is both, with the calendar deciding when to focus and Freedom making sure you do.

Who each is for

Freedom logo

Choose Freedom if…

Pick Freedom if your real enemy is distraction. It suits founders, writers and developers who sit down to write a plan or a proposal and find themselves in a feed twenty minutes later. You block once and it applies on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Chrome at the same time. Recurring schedules, such as weekday mornings, run without any effort. Locked Mode helps on deadline days. Keep your calendar and chat tool off the blocklist, and check the vendor's notes after a big iOS update, because app blocking can break for a while. Skip it if your job needs constant access to feeds.

Google Calendar logo

Choose Google Calendar if…

Pick Google Calendar if you are a founder or small team on Google Workspace who needs shared calendars, invitations and free and busy checks. It rarely breaks, which is what you want from a calendar, and the Gmail and Meet integration removes a step from every call. There is a public API and an official MCP server in developer preview. Know its limits. It is a calendar, not a planner, so time blocking and task planning need another layer, and the richer admin and sharing controls come with paid Workspace plans. If your company runs entirely on Microsoft 365, the Outlook calendar fits better.
