Toptal
Why Toptal
Toptal is a marketplace of pre-screened freelance talent. It covers developers, designers, marketing experts, management consultants, project managers, product managers and sales experts. You describe your need, get matched with candidates and start with a trial period before you commit. It suits companies that want vetted specialists quickly.
What it does
Toptal is a talent network. It screens freelancers, then matches you with candidates for your project. The talent pool covers developers, designers, marketing experts, management consultants, project managers, product managers and sales experts. Management consultants include finance roles such as CFO consultants and M&A specialists.
Why you would need it
The pain is time and risk. Posting a job on an open marketplace gives you many applicants, and you spend days reading them. With a vetted network, a person from Toptal talks to you about the need, sends you hand-picked candidates, and you start working with one of them.
That is useful for a senior role that has to be right: a lead developer for an MVP, a fractional CFO for a funding round, a designer for a product redesign.
Where it fits
Toptal sits before the work starts, like any hiring channel. It competes with open marketplaces such as Fiverr and Upwork, with recruitment agencies, and with consulting firms. After the match, the freelancer joins your own stack: your Git host, your project tool, your Slack.
How an engagement works
You start with a call to describe the work. Toptal sends candidates, you talk to them, and the engagement begins with a trial. If you are satisfied, billing continues for as long as you need the person. If you are not, you are not billed for the trial and you can try another candidate.
Hourly, part-time and full-time arrangements are all listed on the developers page. Ask what the platform subscription covers before you sign, because it is separate from the freelancer's own rate.
What stands out
- A trial period of up to two weeks at the start of an engagement, where you pay only if you are satisfied.
- You can try up to three people per position before you commit.
- An average matching time that the homepage puts at under 24 hours.
- A single platform for several roles, from engineering to finance and sales.
My take
I would pick Toptal when the cost of a wrong hire is high and speed matters. You pay for the screening, and in return you skip the sorting. The site describes a flat platform subscription and invoicing twice a billing cycle, which makes the commercial model simple to follow.
I would not use it for small, cheap tasks. Rates are agreed per engagement and are not listed publicly, so ask for a number early.
Verdict
Pick it when you need a senior specialist soon and want someone else to do the first screening. Skip it for small jobs, tight budgets or work where an open marketplace gives you enough choice.

Rates are not public
Expert rates are set per engagement and are not shown on the site. Ask for the hourly or monthly rate before the match turns into a commitment, and compare it with an agency quote for the same scope.

Subscription and trial terms
There is a platform subscription charged when you proceed with matching, and the trial runs up to two weeks. Read the platform subscription terms and the refund conditions before you start.
Fewer, more selective candidates
You get a shortlist rather than a long list. That saves time, but you see less of the market. If you want to compare many offers on price, an open marketplace such as Fiverr or Upwork gives you more.
Contract and country details
Freelancers work internationally. Check contractor status, VAT and intellectual property terms before you hire for ongoing work.
