Recurring commissions

What it is
Recurring commissions pay an affiliate a share of every payment a referred customer makes, not only the first one. If a customer pays for a software subscription each month, the affiliate earns on each renewal for as long as you set the rule to run, for example for twelve months or for the lifetime of the customer. FirstPromoter, Post Affiliate Pro, Rewardful and Tapfiliate are listed with this feature.
Why it matters
For subscription businesses, a customer's value comes from renewals, so paying only on the first sale rewards the wrong thing. Recurring commissions attract affiliates who recommend your product for the long term and who care whether customers stay. You need this if you sell subscriptions or memberships. If you sell one-off products, it has no use, and a single-sale commission is simpler.
What to check
- Ask whether you can limit recurring commission to a set number of months or payments.
- Test what happens on refunds, cancellations and plan upgrades or downgrades.
- Check that renewals are picked up automatically from your billing system, not entered by hand.
- Find out whether different commission rates can apply to the first payment and to renewals.
