Contractor tax and compliance handling

What it is
Contractor tax and compliance handling means the vendor takes on part of the administration of working with self-employed people. Depending on the vendor, that can cover collecting tax forms, checking whether someone is correctly classed as a contractor rather than an employee, or paying contractors through its own payroll. For example, a marketplace may collect the right form from a freelancer before the first payment is released. Upwork is a tool that lists this feature.
Why it matters
Hiring freelancers across borders brings rules on tax reporting, worker status and sometimes social contributions. Getting them wrong can mean fines or back payments. Handling by the vendor reduces the paperwork, but it rarely removes your legal responsibility. If you only hire a few local freelancers, you may manage with your own accountant. If you hire in many countries, built-in handling saves real time.
What to check
- Exactly which tasks does the vendor perform, and which stay with you?
- Which countries and contractor types are covered?
- Does the vendor accept liability for classification errors, or only provide guidance?
- Will your accountant be able to export the records they need?
