Cancellation save flows

Offers built-in ways to keep a customer who tries to cancel, such as a cancellation survey, a discount offer or the option to pause the subscription.

What it is

A cancellation save flow is the set of steps a customer sees when they click cancel. Instead of ending the subscription at once, the tool asks why they are leaving and may offer a discount, a pause or a cheaper plan. Stripe Billing is an example of a tool that offers this. The reason given is stored, so you can see patterns.

Why it matters

Many customers cancel because of price or a temporary pause in need, and a good offer at that moment can keep them. The reasons also show what to fix in the product. It matters most for subscription businesses with a steady stream of cancellations. It matters less if you have few customers and can phone each one yourself. Offers that are too pushy irritate people, and in some places rules require cancelling to be easy.

What to check

  • Can you choose which offer a customer sees based on their reason?
  • Are cancellation reasons stored and reported?
  • Can the customer still complete the cancellation without obstacles?
  • Can you test one offer against another to see which keeps more customers?
