Mixpanel vs PostHog

Mixpanel logovsPostHog logo
Mixpanel is analytics first, built so product managers can run funnels and retention without SQL. PostHog bundles analytics with replay, flags, experiments and more for engineering-led teams.

The verdict

For a small B2B software team with at least one engineer, I'd pick PostHog. One source of truth with less glue between vendors is worth a lot, each product has a free allowance, and SQL is there when the built-in reports run out. If the person doing the analysis is a product manager who wants self-serve funnels and retention and has no wish to learn a wider platform, pick Mixpanel. It is quicker to pick up. If you only need website traffic reports, neither is the answer and Google Analytics is enough. Run the same funnel in both before you commit.

Who each is for

Choose Mixpanel if…

Mixpanel suits product, growth and analytics teams at software companies who want to see how users move through funnels and retention without writing SQL. A product manager can use it alone. A meeting about a drop in signups can start with a funnel chart instead of opinions. Cohort Sync sends groups of users to tools such as Braze and Google Ads, and the free plan is large enough to learn on. Plan your tracking before installing: agree names, document them and give someone ownership. Paid plans follow event volume, so heavy tracking and replay drive the bill.

Choose PostHog if…

PostHog suits B2B product and engineering teams that want analytics, replay, flags and experiments on the same data. You watch the funnel, replay the session that explains the drop and ship a fix behind a flag without switching tools. The cost is breadth. There is a learning curve, and it needs engineering time for the SDK and the event plan. Start with one or two products and add others later. Pricing is usage-based per product, so set billing limits and watch event volume. Most teams should use the cloud version, since self-hosting is real work.
