GitHub vs Pipedream

GitHub logovsPipedream logo
GitHub is where code is hosted, reviewed and shipped. Pipedream now gives developers managed authentication so agents and apps can act in their users' accounts. Different jobs, so pick by what you are building.

The verdict

If you ship code, pick GitHub. Almost every software team needs it, and Pipedream does not replace any part of it. Pick Pipedream as well only if you are building an agent or product that must act inside each customer's Slack, Gmail or CRM, and you do not want to build OAuth flows yourself. In that case the two work side by side. Do not choose Pipedream as a visual workflow builder for your own team, and do not start a new automation project on its old Workflows product. For that need, look at Zapier, Make or n8n. If nobody on your side writes code, neither tool is for you.

Who each is for

GitHub logo

Choose GitHub if…

Pick GitHub if your team writes code, or if AI agents write part of it. It gives you reviewable history, checks that run on every change and a deliberate merge step. Actions handles builds, tests and deployments, and the ecosystem is wide enough that integrations usually already exist. A free plan with private repositories, a public REST API and an official MCP server make it easy to start. Keep planning in a tool built for it, since Issues are capable but not a full roadmap tool. Workflows can become long YAML files, so review them as usage grows.

Choose Pipedream if…

Pick Pipedream Connect if you are a developer building an AI agent or a software product where each user connects third-party apps. Managed OAuth, token storage and refresh for more than 3,000 APIs would otherwise be weeks of plumbing. If no prebuilt tool exists, the proxy attaches the right user's credentials to your request. The hosted MCP server gives an agent tool discovery and per-user authentication. It is an SDK, an API and an endpoint, so you need engineers. Cost grows with connected users and usage, and your users' tokens are stored by a third party, so read the security docs first.
