Amplitude vs SurveyMonkey

Amplitude logovsSurveyMonkey logo
Amplitude shows what users do inside your product, while SurveyMonkey asks people what they think. Behaviour tells you what happened, and a survey helps you find out why. Pick by the question.

The verdict

If you run a software product with enough users that behaviour is the question, and someone can own the tracking plan, I'd pick Amplitude. If you need real answers from customers, employees or a market quickly, such as satisfaction, NPS or an employee pulse check, I'd pick SurveyMonkey. It needs no engineering. Amplitude also has guides and surveys of its own, but it is an analytics platform first. For a product team the two work well together. Use Amplitude to find where users leave, then a survey to ask the people who left.

Who each is for

Amplitude logo

Choose Amplitude if…

Pick Amplitude if you build a web or mobile product and want to see how people use it. Funnels, cohorts and segments show where users drop off and which behaviour predicts retention. It adds session replay, heatmaps and experiments. The free plan has no time limit and every plan has unlimited seats. It needs engineering time to send events and a tracking plan to keep them clean, and the interface is dense. It is the wrong choice if you want opinions from people outside your product, or only website traffic, where Google Analytics is simpler.

SurveyMonkey logo

Choose SurveyMonkey if…

Pick SurveyMonkey if you are a marketing, HR or customer experience team that needs feedback at scale and no one to build plumbing. More than 400 templates and question banks get a competent survey out in minutes, and respondents recognise the format. It covers satisfaction and NPS, employee feedback, event follow-ups and market research, with integrations for Salesforce, Power BI and Tableau. The free Basic plan limits questions and responses, and extra responses cost more on paid plans, so estimate your volume. It looks like a survey, so a branded, conversational form is better built in Typeform or Tally.
