Amplitude vs Mixpanel

Amplitude logovsMixpanel logo
Amplitude and Mixpanel are close rivals for event-based product analytics. I'd start with Mixpanel for a small team that wants self-serve funnels, and Amplitude when you want its wider platform and unlimited seats.

The verdict

For a small software team where a product manager needs answers without help from data people, I'd start with Mixpanel. It is quick to use on your own, and the free plan with a million events is large enough to learn on. I'd pick Amplitude if you want more under one roof, such as heatmaps and in-product guides, or if many people need seats and unlimited seats on every plan matters. Both are usage-based as you grow, and both need a tracking plan before you install anything. Since they are so close, run the same funnel in both before you decide.

Who each is for

Amplitude logo

Choose Amplitude if…

Pick Amplitude if you run a product where behaviour is the question and someone will own the tracking plan. You get funnels, cohorts and segments, plus session replay, heatmaps, experiments, guides and surveys. The free plan has no time limit, every plan has unlimited seats, and the MCP server works on the free plan. The interface is dense, and setup and training take time, so begin with one funnel and one retention question. Usage-based pricing grows with event volume. Early-stage companies can apply for a free year of a paid plan, so check the criteria.

Mixpanel logo

Choose Mixpanel if…

Pick Mixpanel if you want product managers to run funnels, flows and retention on their own, without SQL. The free plan covers a million events and 10,000 session replays, which is enough to learn on, and early-stage startups can get a free first year on a dedicated plan. Session replay, experiments and feature flags are in the same product, and Cohort Sync can send groups to ad and engagement tools. A hosted MCP server and an agent in beta let you ask questions in plain language. Spend time on a tracking plan first, because events you did not track cannot be analysed later.
