Amplitude vs Heap

Amplitude logovsHeap logo
Amplitude has you define the events that matter and analyses them in depth, while Heap captures everything automatically and lets you define events afterwards. Choose by whether you have someone to plan tracking.

The verdict

If you have an engineer who can instrument events and someone who will own a tracking plan, I'd pick Amplitude. It has a free plan with no time limit, unlimited seats on every plan and an official MCP server on all plans. If you have no engineer to spare, or the product changes often and you keep wishing you had tracked something, I'd pick Heap. Be honest about the cost of each. Amplitude has a dense interface and a setup effort. Heap's pricing is based on sessions and is not published, and capturing everything needs discipline to avoid noise.

Who each is for

Amplitude logo

Choose Amplitude if…

Pick Amplitude if you run a product with enough users that behaviour is the real question, and someone owns the tracking plan. You get funnels, cohorts and segments, plus session replay, heatmaps, experiments, guides and surveys under one roof. The free plan has no time limit, every plan has unlimited seats, and the MCP server works on the free plan too. Expect a learning curve and dense screens. Usage-based pricing grows with event volume, so estimate yours first. Start with one funnel and one retention question. The vendor also runs a programme that gives early-stage companies a free year of a paid plan.

Heap logo

Choose Heap if…

Pick Heap if you want behaviour data fast and cannot plan every event in advance. One snippet captures every interaction, and you apply new definitions to history, so the question you think of next quarter can still be answered. It adds session replay, heatmaps, maps of user flows and a chat assistant, and it suits product, marketing and data people who do not write SQL. Name events clearly and agree who owns them, or the reports multiply and nobody trusts them. Mask sensitive fields and respect consent. Paid plans are priced by session volume, and Heap is now part of Contentsquare.
