ActiveCampaign vs Marketo Engage

ActiveCampaign logovsME
ActiveCampaign is a self-serve automation tool with a built-in CRM for small teams. Marketo Engage is Adobe's platform for larger B2B teams with a marketing operations owner and a CRM to plug into.

The verdict

For a small B2B team, I'd pick ActiveCampaign. You can start without a sales process, the CRM is included,.

I'd pick Marketo Engage when marketing operations is a role, you run Salesforce or Dynamics, and you need attribution that sales trusts. It is built for that setup.

The risk with Marketo for a small team is cost and ownership. Adobe sells four packages and shows no prices without a sales conversation, and programmes, tokens, smart campaigns and scoring models take time to set up well. Without an owner it becomes an expensive email tool. If your CRM is not Salesforce, Dynamics or Veeva, you rely on the API or a connector.

Who each is for

Choose ActiveCampaign if…

Pick ActiveCampaign when you want automation and a light CRM without a platform owner. I have used ActiveCampaign on several B2B projects, including my own startup, and it gave me more than I expected for the price.

It had rough edges. An automation occasionally failed to trigger, and very large workflows were slow. The CRM was the limit for me, because I wanted custom objects and ended up using tags. Check the current developer docs on custom objects on contacts before you rule it out.

It suits a team that sends email, SMS or WhatsApp, scores leads and wants a task or deal created when a lead warms up.

ME

Choose Marketo Engage if…

Pick Marketo Engage when you are a mid-size or enterprise B2B team with volume, a native CRM link and someone who owns the platform.

It offers custom data objects, listed with 10 objects and 2 million records, so the data model can follow your business. There is a documented REST API with a daily quota that starts at 20,000 calls on Growth and 50,000 on higher packages, and an official MCP server.

Map your must-have features to a package before you sign. Account-based marketing, advanced analytics and sandboxes are listed on only some of the four packages. Skip it if you want to start small, self-serve and cheaply.
