Goal and OKR tracking

What it is
OKRs, short for objectives and key results, are a way of stating what you want to achieve and how you will measure it. This feature lets you record those goals in the same tool as the work itself and connect the two. A goal such as "Reduce onboarding time" could be linked to the projects and tasks that are meant to achieve it. Jira and Linear are examples of tools that offer this.
Why it matters
Teams often write goals in a slide deck and then lose sight of them while day-to-day work takes over. Keeping goals next to the work makes it easier to see which tasks support a goal and which are unrelated to anything. You need this when several teams must pull in the same direction and leadership wants to check progress. A very small team that talks daily may find a shared document just as good.
What to check
- Ask whether progress is calculated from linked work or has to be updated by hand.
- Check whether goals can be nested, for example company goals above team goals.
- Test whether a goal can be tied to a number from another system rather than only to completed tasks.
- Find out who can see and edit goals, and whether they can be reviewed by period.
