Claude Code vs Cursor

Claude Code logovsCursor logo
Claude Code is an agent you direct from the terminal, an editor extension, the desktop or the browser. Cursor is a full editor built around agents. Choose by whether you want to change your editor.

The verdict

For a small team where every developer already has an editor they like, I'd pick Claude Code. Nobody has to switch, and the same settings and MCP servers follow you across surfaces. If several people write code daily and you want one place to standardise how the agent behaves, with team controls such as privacy mode and usage analytics, I'd pick Cursor.

Both bill on usage in some way, so test them on a real week of work. Cursor has a free plan to start on, and Claude Code does not. In either case, keep tests and code review in place. Fast output without review is how bugs reach customers.

Who each is for

Claude Code logo

Choose Claude Code if…

Pick Claude Code if you have a real codebase, more clear work than hands, and developers who prefer their own editor or the terminal. It rewards a good CLAUDE.md file, good tests and small, well-described tasks. It can also run without a person present, through a print mode for scripts and CI, an Agent SDK and scheduled routines.

It suits technical founders who can explain the product and direct the work, as long as someone reads the diffs. There is no free plan. It comes with the paid Claude plans or through the API, so check which one covers your usage.

Choose Cursor if…

Pick Cursor if you or your team write code every day and want the agent built into the editor. It plans, edits across the whole repository and runs commands, and cloud agents let work continue without your laptop open. Bugbot adds agentic review on pull requests.

It fits product teams that want shared rules, skills and hooks so the agent follows house style. The cost is lock-in to its editor. Agents on large repositories use the included model usage quickly, and anything beyond is billed on demand, so set spend limits early.
